What is a life path number?
A life path number is a single value that numerology derives from a full birth date. In the Pythagorean method used on this site, it is the most widely discussed number in a numerology chart, because it uses all three parts of the date: the month, the day and the year. Numerologists describe it as a theme for the overall direction of a life. It is better understood as a vocabulary for reflection than as a measurement: the same date always produces the same number, and the number cannot know anything about you that the date does not already contain.
The possible results are the single digits 1 to 9 and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Each one has a traditional set of associations. For example, 1 is linked with initiative, 4 with structure, 7 with inquiry and 9 with completion. Each number page on this site explains those associations through personality, love, career and compatibility, and offers practical questions you can test against your own experience.
How the calculation works
The calculation has three steps. First, reduce the month, the day and the year separately. To reduce a number, add its digits together and repeat until you reach a single digit, unless you reach 11, 22 or 33 along the way. Second, add the three reduced parts. Third, reduce that total with the same rule.
Here is a worked example for 29 November 1987:
Month: 11 → kept as a master number
Day: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → kept as a master number
Year: 1987 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7
Total: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11
Life path number: 11
Reducing each part before adding them is the step that many quick calculators skip. If you add every digit of 11/29/1987 in a single line, you get 1 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 38, then 3 + 8 = 11, which happens to match here. For other dates the two methods can disagree, and they disagree most often around master numbers. Because the calculator on this page shows each line of arithmetic, you can see exactly where your number comes from.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
Master numbers are two-digit results that the Pythagorean tradition keeps instead of reducing. In this calculator, 11, 22 and 33 are kept whenever they appear: when a month is November, when a day is the 11th, 22nd or 29th, when a year reduces to one of them, and when the final total does.
Master numbers are often described as intensified versions of the digits they would otherwise reduce to: 11 relates to 2, 22 relates to 4 and 33 relates to 6. That description is a convention, not a ranking. A master number is not better, rarer in any meaningful sense, or a sign of a special mission. It is simply where the arithmetic stops under this rule.
How to read your number
Start with the short summary in your result, then open the full page for your number. Read the descriptions as questions rather than verdicts. If a sentence feels accurate, ask what you have actually done that supports it. If it feels wrong, that is useful too: your experience is better evidence about you than any number.
Your life path is one of several values in a full numerology chart. The numerology calculator adds name-based numbers (expression, soul urge and personality), your birthday number and your personal year. The numerology chart shows which digits appear in your birth date, and the compatibility calculator compares two life path numbers using a fixed table.
A note on accuracy and limits
The arithmetic on this page is exact and repeatable: anyone who enters the same date will see the same steps and the same result. The meanings are not. They come from a symbolic tradition that has never been shown to describe personality, predict events or measure compatibility. Enjoy them as a starting point for conversation and self-reflection, and make real decisions with real information.
